
The Burkhardt Farm is owned an operated by my brother in-law Dale in Southwestern Minnesota. Dale took over farming his family farm nearly two decades ago, the high demand for ethanol has led him to focus most of his efforts on growing corn.

The Skagit River Valley in Washington produces the second highest crops of spring bulbs next to Holland. The Tulip Festival is held annually during the end of March and beginning of April, to say that it is colorful is an understatement! Despite the lack of sun the colors in the tulip fields were saturated with reds, yellows and every combination each, the scale of the crops can only be comprehended by standing in the middle of a field, regardless of which direction you turn your eyes will be bathed in color.

The annual Duluth Tall Ships Festival in August occurs during a yearly Great Lakes race of working wind powered boats. Altogether, nine tall ships converged on Duluth beginning July 28th, 2010. Included in the armada were the Denis Sullivan, Wisconsin’s official boat, the schooner Roseway, the Barque Europa and the HMS Bounty.

In the Fall of last year we set out on a photo expedition to Colorado to capture mountain landscapes in their full splendor.

One of the fun things about using the iPhone 4 as a point and shoot is the availability of photo and video related apps. One of our favorite is the Hipstamatic which comes very close to duplicating the old plastic Holga and Lomo cameras used during our film days. Without having to fool around in a dark room the Hipstamatic app produces some truly funky surprises!

Every year we publish a calendar of images that reflect our travels and shoots during that year. In 2011 we decided to start using the High Dynamic Range(HDR) technique which produces an image that truly reflects the range of light within the scene.

Monday December 27th we woke up to a landscape covered in Hoar Frost brought about by ice crystals freezing to hard surfaces; in this case the surfaces were trees. We were lucky to be up just as the sun was coming up so we quickly grabbed our cameras and headed out.
