A different take on fall
When not shooting weddings, portraits etc.I often find that I need to push my comfort zone in order to stay fresh and keep my creative spark alive. One way I do that is to spend some time (could be hours or days) photographing certain types of subjects uusing only one lens at one focal length. One of mmy facvorites is my Lens Baby a lens that combines the best of a pin hole camera and a tilt/shift bellows camera. The lens allows me to vary the “seet spot”, the location of full focus as well as vary the degree of out of focus.
A couple of Saturdays ago when the fall colors were still in theirr prime we spent the afternoon capturing the color. Here are some of the results:
Here are some with my other favorite my 10.5 mm fish eye.
Scott and Rachel
Scott and Rachel’s late September wedding in Hastings MN. A totally beautiful day and with the bluest clearest sky I have seen in a long time!!
Kristine and Jim
I have been kind of late posting weddings so i thought I would try to get caught up in reverse order!! So here a few Kristine and Jim’s September 1st very exquisite wedding or as one of my architecture professor’s used to say”elegantly simple”. We set up a photo booth as part of the reception and had great fun with the guests!! Jim is a comic buff so I turned some of the images into comix and will be putting together a comic version of the wedding so stay tuned.
Kristine’s dress included lace from her great-grandmother, so I scanned a swatch of it and used it as a textural overlay for some of her images.
So here are a few from their wedding:
Covering the candidate
Some of you may already know that I have had the honor to be Al Franken’s photographer as he runs for US Senate here in Minnesota. I strongly beleive in voting with my skills and encourage everyone with a marketable skill to do so regardless of party affiliation, it is the best way I know of to help maintain our democracy.
So…I have been following Al around to some of his events. Several weeks ago we had the privilage to spend a couple of hours with Al and his wife Franny in their home, we collaborated on making his official headshot along with several other formal and informal captures. My good friend and fellow photographer extrodinaire Randi also helped with the session. They were truly a delight to be around, Franny is a very dear person and Al besides his infamous sense of humor is all heart.
I have had the privilage of photographing other polical candidates and Al is probably the most real I have seen.
Anyway, keep checking back as I’ll be posting more as we head towards the nominating convention.
Aric & Mina’s wedding
We had the honor of photographing Aric and Mina’s wedding July 20th in Belgrade,MN. The ceremony was held in an historic Norwegian church built by Mina’s great, great grandfather around 150 years ago. he was one of the first settlers in the area.
Mina and her party got ready on her grandparent’s farm just up the road from the church. Mina spent a lot of time on their farm as a child and it was easy to see why she had such good memories. Her grandparents one 90 and the other 88 were very active, infact they stayed at the reception well beyond our departure.
The farm offered a great setting for photos so lets take a look:
First bridal session
We have started including bridal porrtraits in our packages and this past Saturday we had the pleasure of photographing Marjorie. We primarily used our Back yard and it’s English cottage garden as a setting, we then headed off to Minnehaha Park for more. The sesion was so much fun we all had a really hard time stopping!!
Here are some more from the session:
Dan & Lindsay’s guest book
We just got Dan and Lindsay’s guest book back and it is gorgeous!! I tried some different styles with this book…First I used patterns as overlays to giver the backgound of the pages some added depth and second I resurrected my drawing skills and inserted sketches as part of the illustration. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out but jusdging from the results I think I’ll be doing more of this.
I did the sketches with my Wacom digitzing tablet, basically a pad that I draw on that has about a bazillion layers of sensativity. This duplicates the pressure sensativity of regular drawing media. Anyway here is the book, shown in 2 page spreads, the one above is the cover.
The photos were taken in the Fall of ‘06 in Stillwater, MN and June ‘07 at Applewwod Golf course also in Stillwater.
I also just completed a Podcast of the 2 sessions and will be updating it with wedding photos. Here is the link to it:
The boys are back…
This past Saturday we had a dog pool party for some friends and their dogs. the temps were hovering around 100 so everybody was happy!! It was actually an excuse to celebrate our golden’s 2 year birthday. Imagine three goldens and one standard poodle going non-stop for about 3 hours!!!! Ours crashed right after they all left and he was out until the morning.
We have been working pet photography into our repetoire so water pictures of water dogs was great. I even got in with my camera…wish I had an underwater one tho!!
